Help norm THETIS

THETIS places its puzzles on the IQ scale with the first attempts of people whose IQ is already known from a professionally given, supervised test. If you have such a score, your first THETIS session helps everyone who takes it after you, and it costs half the fee: US$9.99 instead of US$19.99.

Places are limited: the discount is for up to 50 volunteers.

Why your score matters

The norms of THETIS are provisional. The difficulty of each puzzle comes from the item model, an estimate from the complexity of its rules. Real examinees whose IQ is already known show where the puzzles actually sit: with each volunteer's ability held at their known score, their answers place every puzzle family on the scale.

Only first attempts count, because a second session benefits from practice. A calibration rests on at least 10 such volunteers, and the aim is 30, spread over the range. It is applied only when it predicts the known scores of people it was not fitted on better than the difficulties in force, each volunteer left out in turn; otherwise the norms stay as they are.

Your own THETIS score is worked out exactly as everyone else's: your earlier score never changes it.

Average scores are needed most. The aim is about ten volunteers from IQ 85 to 115, ten from 115 to 130 and ten above 130. People who take high-range tests tend to have high scores, so a score near 100 helps the calibration as much as any.

What counts: a test given and scored by a professional under supervision, with published norms: the Wechsler scales (WAIS, WISC), the Stanford-Binet (SB5), Raven's Progressive Matrices or the Cattell Culture Fair test given under supervision, or the supervised admission test of a high-IQ society. Online tests and high-range tests taken at home do not count.

How it works

  1. Apply below

The test you took, your score and its scale, and the year. You receive an application number.

  2. Email a copy of your score report

To jresquites@mensaphilippines.org, with your application number. You may cover everything except your name, the test, its date and your score. The author uses it only to check the score, and deletes it once checked.

  3. Receive your personal code

Once your report is checked, a code for half the fee comes to the email you applied with. It works once, for your first THETIS session, for 60 days.

  4. Take THETIS

Work through the 16 practice puzzles, then take the test alone and without help, in a quiet place. Your result and certificate come at once, like every examinee's, and your first attempt becomes one of the anchor cases.

Apply

Two minutes. You need to be 16 or older, and you must not have taken THETIS before.

The Wechsler scales and the SB5 use SD 15.

Your data

Your application (name, email, country, the test, its score, year and who gave it) is kept for the author, who uses your email only to ask for and acknowledge your score report and to send your code. The copy of the report you email is deleted once checked. Your earlier score is kept with your first THETIS attempt for the calibration of the puzzles, and appears only in de-identified summaries: never with your name, email or certificate ID. Your THETIS session is covered by the THETIS privacy notice. To see, correct or delete your data, email jresquites@mensaphilippines.org.

Questions

Does my earlier score change my THETIS score?

No. Your THETIS score is worked out from your answers exactly as everyone else's. Your earlier score is used only to place the puzzles on the IQ scale, together with the answers and earlier scores of the other volunteers.

My score is average. Is it still useful?

Yes, very. The puzzles must be placed correctly across the whole range, and the aim is about ten volunteers from IQ 85 to 115, ten from 115 to 130 and ten above 130. People who take high-range tests tend to have high scores, so average scores are the rarest and the most needed.

Which tests count?

Tests given and scored by a professional under supervision, with published norms: an individually administered test given by a psychologist (the Wechsler scales, WAIS or WISC, or the Stanford-Binet, SB5), Raven's Progressive Matrices or the Cattell Culture Fair test given under supervision, or the supervised admission test of a high-IQ society. Online tests, and high-range tests taken at home, do not count: THETIS is compared with them, but they cannot anchor its scale. A score near a test's ceiling (a WAIS score above 150, say) says less, but you may still apply.

I have already taken THETIS. Can I still help?

Yes. Only first attempts are used, so the discount is not for you, but your first attempt can still become an anchor case: open your result page, answer the short questionnaire after the result, and tick You may contact me to confirm my earlier score. Or write to jresquites@mensaphilippines.org.

How long does the code last?

60 days from the day it is sent. It works once, with the email you applied with, for your first THETIS session.

How are the results used?

To estimate where each puzzle family sits on the IQ scale. A new calibration is applied only when it predicts the known scores of the people it was not fitted on better than the difficulties in force, each volunteer left out in turn; the technical manual describes the method. Results are reported only in de-identified summaries; no name, email or certificate ID is ever published.
