The name
Exocosm joins the Greek exō, “outside”, and kosmos, “world”: what lies beyond the world itself. Its criterion is beyond every human population that has ever existed. It is the society for the kind of intelligence the universe may hold, and has not yet met.
The criterion
IQ 220 or higher (SD 15), eight standard deviations above the mean. IQ 220 is rarer than one in 1.6 quadrillion. No human population has ever been large enough to expect such a person, so a score this high can only be a position on a test's own scale, measured with the widest margin of error.
